Oh how I like sulforaphane! I should probably say that I think I like sulforaphane. What is sulforaphane? Well. Sulforaphane

Oh how I like sulforaphane! I should probably say that I think I like sulforaphane. What is sulforaphane? Well. Sulforaphane is a natural compound found in cruciferous plants that supports the body’s own antioxidant function and exhibits anticancer, antidiabetic, and antimicrobial properties. Sulforaphane is also a fun word to say. Yay!

One of the reasons I like broccoli sprouts so much is because they have so much sulforaphane in them! Sure you can eat broccoli and get some sulforaphane, but you get 10-20 times as much in broccoli sprouts than you do in cooked broccoli! Woa mama. Don’t stop eating your broccoli though, you can get all sorts of other vitamins and minerals and excellent goodness that will nourish your body.

You know how we talk about blending and smoothie-ing? Like when we talked about the magic bullet and making a smoothie smoothly? Well, what I really like to do is to put broccoli sprouts in my smoothie so that I can get sulforaphane with my smoothie. Yes. I like to blend. We like to blend. Broccoli sprouts and kale, and I am buzz…ing. Like a bee, not a drunkard.

So we are recommending, in this WTDA, that you take some means to get you some sulforaphane. Get your hands on some and let us know what you think. Stuff some sprouts in sandwiches and take lots when you feel a cold coming on, and maybe, perchance, if you dare, throw some in a smoothie.

Now I know I have touched on kid topics before, especially kids and their condiments. Well now-a-days my kids have done just fine coming away from the ketchup. They had the occasional flashback, then there was the cold sweats after that, but now we are good.

Other kids though, they are quite different. As a matter of fact we had a child over that was quite found of condiments. Not only that, the boy loved cheese, he wanted it on everything. He asked for cheese for lunch and dinner, but the kicker was when he asked for it on his pancakes. Pancakes!!

I believe his words were “I would really like this with cheese”. I can’t understand if he was serious or just buying time to avoid actually eating his breakfast. Either way it sounded real nasty!

Why are our kids like this? They seem to only be attracted to the worst foods and/or the worst foods for you. I mean, our cheese was good… we don’t fool with that crap yellow cheese, no sir, we like our cheese raw… from raw milk, it’s delicious! So maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad thing. I mean, you could do way worse– like hot sauce!

If your kid wants to cheese it, just tell them to chill out. Food is made to be different! And no ketchup either! No matter what, unless it’s with french fries fried in avocado oil. No ketchup on the toothbrush either!

Happy parenting!

I know exactly what I am missing. Back in the day, when I was a wee lad, some friends and

I know exactly what I am missing. Back in the day, when I was a wee lad, some friends and I used to make regular trips to a certain donut establishment, which shall remain nameless. Let’s just say I owned a t-shirt from them, and I owned stock in their company… really.

I was enamored with the sweet glaze and yeasty aroma. I was blinded by my shortsighted taste buds! Those damn buds!

It seems, at a lot of seminars, conferences, or church events, that donuts are a common attendee. I do not mind if people want to eat donuts, I mean, they can if they want, but I don’t want to eat donuts. Should I care more than that? Should I say something? Oh, but it is always such a hassle.

Many of you know that Terry, Nate, and I are whole-foods-eaters. We eat stuff that is sane, as opposed to high fructose corn syrup. We eat real food, as opposed to artificial food, like in those flavored chips you are eating. Put down the chips!

Ok, ok, so I am all for making stuff at home with high quality ingredients. I mean, coconut oil! Yes! Or Avocado oil! Yes! Canola oil? No! Vegetable oil? No! Corn Syrup? No! Raw cane sugar? Sure.

So, you can see my dilemma with donuts at drive-by establishments. I would rather smoke a cigar. “Donut?” “No.” “Cigar?” “Sure!”

As with all of these type of events, usually there is something you can take part in so that you can be seen as a participant, you know, as part of the gang. So I suggest going for the uh… water! Go for the water. Then, maybe later, you can fill out an anonymous comment/suggestion card that suggests having some fresh cut fruit or vegetable trays at the next event!?

Why anonymous? For some reason, people are so touchy when it comes to food. They get all offended or weirded out if you eat different than them, and then they feel guilty, and then they look at you with that slant in their eyes… oh, I know the slant. I can slant with the best of them.

I know exactly what I am missing: some plaque, a fatty liver, diabetes, and a depressed immune system.

I like a good peach. Remember that song by The Presidents of The United States of America? The song that goes, “Moving to the country. Going to eat a lot of peaches”. I always disliked that song. I always made fun of that song… “They’re not talking about peaches, you know”. Occasionally, Terry will get that song stuck in my head, after which, I will punch him in the face. Well, despite the bad song, I still like peaches.

Back in the day, peaches were among my favorite fruits. Maybe they still are and I just don’t know it, but the berry family has made a significant play for the top spots. I once ate 14 small peaches in one day. No, I did not have any problems digesting that, whatsoever. I take probiotics, you know. Besides, it was like eating 4 regular peaches since these peaches were super small… small and sweet, sweet, sweeeeeeet.

When looking for peaches, look for peaches with an excellent smell, a nice aroma. For ripe peaches, they should give or yield to slight pressure and they should not have any green on them. If your peaches are not ripe, you can speed up ripening by placing them in a paper bag (which will trap the gases that aid in ripening), or you can just place them in a fruit bowl and wait… that is what I do. If your peaches are all ripe and you cannot eat 14 in one day like me, you can place them in the refrigerator… I guess. Peaches picked green and ripened will not get any sweeter, so it is best to get them fresh picked… and for that, I am betting on farmer’s markets, or side-of-the-road stands. Yep. Then, the only thing you have to worry about is, did they spray the peaches with a pesticide that will leave you impotent?

I like to look at peach pie, peach cobbler, but I like to eat fresh peaches, peach jam, peach cookies, and occasionally peach ice cream. Peaches are still in my top 5.

I have recently become addicted to a new iPhone app game called Fruit Ninja thanks to my good buddy Andy.

I have recently become addicted to a new iPhone app game called Fruit Ninja thanks to my good buddy Andy. I’ve read that all ninjas hate fruit and this game allows you to swipe fruit with your finger to end their journey. Thanks to this game I am now in daily training to become an actual real life fruit ninja, except I will still like fruit obviously. My goal is just to take my love for eating fruit and add my love for slashing and splattering fruit to it. As I practice slashing and splattering fruit with my finger I hope to become an elite ninja and gain more pleasure from enjoying a much more messy yet satisfying fruit consumption experience.

My long term goal is to open my own dojo and teach other little fruit ninja hopefuls my secrets in slashing and splattering fruit. I will also be providing them with a nutritious fruity snack at the same time which is something their little bodies need anyways, parents will like that. Instead of having colored belts to show rank like in most martial arts, I will have fruity belts, for example the banana belt is for beginners, the berry belt is a level higher, the citrus belt is a level higher than that, followed by apples, island fruits, and then on to melons…you get the idea. I will teach my little fruit seeds (that’s what I will call my young students) how to slash to the point where they can achieve 2 fruit combos, 3 fruit combos, 4 fruit combos, and even the famous 5 fruit combo! Of course a 5 fruit combo of all melons and coconuts seems a bit far fetched but it is possible my friends. A fruit combo is achieved when more than 1 fruit is slashed and splattered with a single swipe. This takes the fruity pleasure to a whole new level of satisfaction.

Someday when I retire I will become ‘Master Nate the Fruit Sensei’. I hope to take my message of fruitiness to the masses and start a new refreshing movement of messiness. So if you’re stuck in a rut, or just frequently constipated, you’re welcome to follow me on to fruitier pastures!

Why is it, tell me, why is it that the tables have to be sticky at almost every dining establishment??

Why is it, tell me, why is it that the tables have to be sticky at almost every dining establishment?? I go to place my arms on the table and yuck, a gross a me out a. My arms are now sticky. Greeeeaaat, just greeaat.

Now I have to test the tables before I set anything down. The sticky tables have ruined my trust in the establishment to procure the resting of not only my body, but also my cellphone, not to mention my silverware! Thankfully, most silverware is wrapped in paper or cloth, and then after I remove it I carefully place the fork on top of the knife if I am not going to use the knife, and if I am going to use the knife, I place it on a plate, and if there is no plate I place it on paper, and if there is no paper I say, “screw it, let the germs have their way”.

So let me make a couple of recommendations to you about what you should do when you are confronted with sticky tables at restaurants:

A) Do not touch the table the whole time. Only allow the bottom of the plate and glass to touch the table.

B) Ask the waiter or waitresss to wipe the table off. Typically this doesn’t work very well because they wipe it off and it remains sticky. There needs to be some decent elbow grease put into the action. Typically, there are oily fingers touching the tables before we sat down, and for that we need a mildly soapy wipe down.

C) At an informal establishment (which is usually where this problem occurs), I find it completely acceptable to spread out a napkin before you on the table. In fact, spread two or three napkins, that way you can have an area to place your arms and phone (considering you do not like to keep your phone in your pocket).

D) Spit shine it.

When I am at Whole Foods or a coffee shop, I usually find myself going with option C, depending on the severity and the type of establishment I will go with option B, and yes, I have gone with option A on occasion. I have never gone with option D, but I almost want to, sometime my friend, sometime.

And there you have it! Have you?

How do you approach eating out? Or dining out, if you prefer. I am not referring to spending money or where you eat, but what is your modus operandi?

My late grandpa, who we fittingly called Gramps, would walk into a restaurant like he owned the place. Sure, he might look at the menu, but then he would say, “give me a half dozen (insert whatever here)”. When he would visit our house, he would make my Dad go buy him beer. Mind you, at the time, my Dad was a pastor of a small church in a small town. If you knew my Dad you would laugh. I am laughing just thinking about it. My Gramps would take a little tiny juice glass and pour a little beer in it and drink it while cutting and eating pepperoncini peppers with a fork. He would do this in the morning. He was, as they say, “something else”. Who “they” are, and what the “something else” is, I don’t know. Needless to say, when eating out with Gramps, it could be quite the adventure.

On the other hand, I am not that way at all. When I eat out, I pretty much take it as it comes and then, if I didn’t like something, usually, I will not say anything. However, I will then never go back and make sure not to recommend it to anyone. Mind you, I do not do this because I am being gracious. Oh no, it is quite the opposite and more for the very reason that I do not want to give the restaurant a chance to redeem themselves. I just want them to lose business. I am done, I have had it, and they failed the test. I don’t need to write reviews or make big news, and I don’t want anyone to schmooze. Well, maybe sometimes schmooze. Ok not really.

So, I guess, different circumstances factor into your approach when eating out. When thinking about, what you should do about, your approach to eating out, perhaps consider some of the situations you may find yourself in. (I really wanted to say “yerself”, right there, but I didn’t). For example, if I receive something I didn’t order, then I will most definitely send it back and get what I ordered. So, I guess it depends. So many things in life depend.

Are you a finicky diner-outer? Do you leave comments and notes for the restaurant? Do you leave reviews online? Hmmmm?

There is something about slipping hot sauce under my son’s ketchup that makes me laugh till milk comes out my nose. It reminds me of the pranking that I have done to my old buddy Steve. I have pranked old Steve so much that all I have to do is call him and say “dude, check your pillow” and he will pull off all his sheets, pillow cases, and blankets and burn them all in suspicion of pranking. It’s nice to know that all your hard work has paid off, so much so, that you don’t have to actually do anything.

Slipping hot sauce into my kid’s food is funny, but putting it in the ketchup bottle lid is just priceless. Try it and see if you don’t laugh till you pee a little in your pants. His face fills with joy as he is so excited to destroy some ketchup with a handful of homemade fries. Then, after a hearty dip, his face turns to one of fear. Then, as the food falls out of his mouth, you are at such a high that you laugh uncontrollably when he yells, “I hate you dad!”. After that incident, of course all I have to do now is look at him and he starts crying, then his mother has to tell him that I didn’t do anything because we don’t even have any hot sauce.

Imagine my excitement when I had a client bring me some cinnamon-chile-chocolate from a local chocolatier. This chocolate was spicy and maybe even a little hot, I liked it as did my youngest, but the wife and my oldest actually spit it out. My oldest ran to the water before he spit his out, his reaction was just what I had hoped for. I got the “look” from the wife. This look suggested that I was too mean for my own good, I assured her that it was hereditary. Then I reminded her of the flaming burrito of 95‘.

Give your kids spicy food! It’s a riot and who knows, maybe in the future they will actually thank you for it, it’s not likely, but one can hope, right?

How quickly we forget what it was like to be sitting at a table staring at broccoli or brussels sprouts, crying and telling our parents that we didn't want them, or that we did not like them. I remember doing that with my brussels sprouts till they were so cold that they made me gag, but I had to sit there till I ate them. Why? Because there were starving kids in Africa! I think I was only in the 6th grade when this happened to me, but it is burned into my memory like a cattle brand on the ass of some prime A beef!

Something I never thought of as a kid, is that, maybe I just didn't like vegetables and was more of a meat eater. Or, maybe I am a carb kid like my oldest son. He takes after his mother with his overwhelming need to have pasta, noodles or toast. As where my youngest loves meat and vegetables, this is how I know he is not mine. But that is another blog on another site somewhere

Something I never thought of as a kid, is that, maybe I just didn’t like vegetables and was more of a meat eater. Or, maybe I am a carb kid like my oldest son. He takes after his mother with his overwhelming need to have pasta, noodles or toast. As where my youngest loves meat and vegetables, this is how I know he is not mine. But that is another blog on another site somewhere…

I find myself demanding my kids to eat their dinner and stop crying, well, not both kids just the one that doesn’t like vegetables. I know he is like me to some extent, but I sure don’t remember being so crazy about it. Crying while he is eating is not a pretty site, might I add. Just tonight he was nibbling on a piece of broccoli so as to make it look like he was taking a bite, but just then it fell on the ground. This made me really upset, and the dog really happy… I guess that is the one plus-side to the whole thing, my four-legged vacuum cleaner of a dog. He was in and out like lightning, no sooner had the food hit the floor and there is this black blur and then a burp. Just like that, the floor is clean.

I used to play this game with my dog at home, I would sit there till my parents got tired of watching me. They would leave the room, still yelling mind you, but from the living room. I would give bite by bite to my dog so that I could get up and maybe pee before bed. Sitting there for hours was a massive pain! I think I have a new way to deal with it, you see, my parents would put said food back in the fridge and warm it back up for lunch or dinner the next day. What if I just told my kids that if they didn’t eat, then I would put it back in the fridge for them to eat later, then tell them that they weren’t allowed to have anything for a whole day unless it was there dinner?

I think it could work, especially if I have them watch videos of starving kids in Africa at the same time. That is it! No food for 24 hours plus “feed the children” footage. This will make them thankful for their dinner, no?

Times are tough, life is hard. I know. It is hard to not only manage the budget for food expenditures, but also to manage it in such a way that allows you to eat excellent, healthy food. Especially, since, well... for those of you who know me... well... you know me.

Ok ok, I am focusing now, stay with me. Let's get this over with quick. In order to eat well on a budget you need to:

Times are tough, life is hard. I know. It is hard to not only manage the budget for food expenditures, but also to manage it in such a way that allows you to eat excellent, healthy food. Especially, since, well… for those of you who know me… well… you know me.

Ok ok, I am focusing now, stay with me. Let’s get this over with quick. In order to eat well on a budget you need to:

A) Be a very content person, and
B) Keep it simple.

Center your nutritious, cheap meals on whole, organic dried beans, legumes, brown rice, and quinoa. Sure, there are others, but I purposefully did not mention the others. Mmhmm.

When you are desperate for variation, and you are craving some meat to add to your base routine, scour the neighborhood. Many times you can find a stray that no one will miss. One quick blow to the head or slitting of the throat and in no time you will be roasting fresh meat over an open fire. Meat which you can add to a stir fry with your brown rice.

Also, you can haunt the local forests looking for mushrooms and berries. Yes, you can eat the berries right off the bushes. Well… not those berries… those are poisonous… but the other ones.

Every now and then you may just strike pure gold… as you may find a deer that has been freshly road killed! Venison! Yaaaaaaaah! If you happen on such a find you may be able to store enough meat to last you through the year… or you could invite all of your friends over to have a big party and roast the deer on a spit.

What about vegetables? I hear you, I hear you. I am a vegetable lover myself.

Find some farms that are near you that have lots of vegetables and plainly talk to them about your sicheeation. Oh yeah, while you are inquiring about vegetables make a quick scan for hens… egg laying hens.

Anyway, perhaps the farmer will give you vegetables in exchange for some chores, or give you a reediculous discount, or give them to you outright, OR, or, or, maybe they will let you glean their fields, just like the farmers in the Old Testament would let the poor glean in their fields. Hmmm.

Whatever you do, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT resort to:
A) Peanut butter and crackers
B) Ramen noodles
C) Bean burritos
D) Spaghetti-O’s
E) Bowls of cereal
