What To Do About STRAY DOGS

20 Dec 2008 by Terry Barga, 14 Comments »

One star drizzled night, while around the campfire with some of my friends, all of a sudden to our surprise we see a stray dog approach the fence. My first reaction, which I surppressed, was to throw a rock or something blunt at the dog but I didn’t because there were women present. Much to my dismay, this sentiment was not shared by the girls and one male friend that will remain nameless to protect his dating ability. They started calling this dog over and of course the dog finds a way into my yard. But it will not come close enough for a good belly scratch…GOOD!

Later, the next morning my son and his friends are playing outside when all of the sudden they come running in and my son was crying like crazy. I asked him what was wrong? He said that a black dog was biting him in the back while he tried to run away. This is when I thought of my wonderful friends that called the mutt over the night before.

No problem though, I will run it off. So I ran outside and chased it into the woods. The dog stayed away most of the day until later in the afternoon I saw it again and the boy started to run and scream as the dog got closer. This is when I decided to get serious about this I grabbed a hammer and went outside and threw it at the dog aiming for the ground so that I would catch the dog on the bounce not because I didn’t want to kill it, because I did, but because if I hit it right, it would run off and die and I would not have to carry it.

I missed. Now you can all relax, but the dog got the message and hasn’t been back since. My solution is to use your hammer, if you miss you will at least spook the dog, if you hit it you will have no more dog. Either way you win!

I would like to make it known that I was all for you throwing a blunt object at the dog. I was against the fiend from the start. AND I really like dogs too.

Wonderful solution. I will try it with my neighbors dog next time she is walking it.

    Good idea Steve!

You might miss the dog but still spook it, and hit the neighbor and have no more neighbor all in one throw.

    OR

You might hit the dog & have no more dog which would definitely spook the neighbor who might then throw something at you but I doubt that you would be spooked or hurt in any way.

Was i at this fire, and was Rick running around trying to pet the nasty dog? If I remember correctly I think I stood on a chair and screamed.

yes, you were at the fire… and I do believe you also were against the dog from the start. Rick was there too, actually I think there were two guys trying to pet the dog and three trying to ward it off. just sayin

Okay, you have a good way of gettin rid of siad stray dog but i reckon a comically large sized but fully working rat or mouse trap and a small stuffed animal would work better and you could make a killer home video that would make a good video for you tube

that's sick, why not call the animal control. If you make it mad its worse for someone else it comes around. also your teaching your kid to be mean to animals.
I live where we have all kinds of wild life and strays and my kids know not to go near them.

we live near water that has gators in them and we all know to stay clear of them and not throw something at them when they are near our dock.

all strays are not bad. people that abuse them make them that way. Did you ever think that was someones dog?

If one of them did bite one of my kids I would take my kids in the house then call animal control, Its as easy as that.

You mean you do not throw stuff at the gators?? Everyone's doing it.

First things first here my kids know not to go near the dogs but the dogs,…the dogs don't know anything about staying away from my kids. This is where the conflict ensues, you see I love dogs as much as the next guy. But if its your dog and it nips at my kids for no good reason its a dead dog, end of story.
Have you ever tried to call animal control? I understand you live in the “wild” but here in a major metropolis they don't have time to hunt down every stray.
Isn't just as bad to have random strays around your house? Doesn't that mean there are inhuman people driving around dropping off there pets?

If a gator would have seen what that dog had done to my kid he would have thrown a hammer at it too!
