I worked as an engineer and producer for years in the 80s and this is pretty much how it goes for a lot of folks.

The one thing I always told folks (and every once in a great while they absorbed it) -- writing and practicing is for the practice pad -- NOT the studio. Have a carefully worked out plan. Try to stick by it but also be flexible. Have all your music written down with all the chords written above the words -- this will greatly help your engineer. (A fake book format can be helpful, as well, with a fixed number of bars on every line.) Time out your songs (a number of times) in practice.

If you have a multi-tracker or a laptop with a DAW (or a computer recording rig) in your practice pad, better yet. Even if you don't have a bunch of tracks (like with an all in one recorder) you can ping pong to work out the arrangement. Rough out the song on the four track. Practice your parts. Know how long sections are and stick by it.

Oh yeah -- and PLEASE make sure your drummer knows how to tune his drums.

Jarrod, beautifully said. I am so proud of the work you all have done. Your music is amazing, and if it takes forever we can all be patient for it because it's well worth it!

Keep Rocking!

I suppose you have to learn when to give and when to take. It would be hard with so many opinions.
